Mystery's Memorable Moments
50 honourable mentions (in date order):
FIRST COMPETITIVE GAME AT THE WCG
Date: 18/11/1905 The WCC joined the local Cameron Cricket Association in 1905/06. Batting first, we made just 34 in its first innings, however thanks to John Till's 6/5, Christmas Hill are dismissed for 21. However after being dismissed for 82 in the 2nd innings, Christmas Hills passed us 6 down to claim a reverse outright. |
JOHN TILL'S EFFORTS IN VAIN
Date: 23/12/1905 In just the WCC's third game, John Till takes 7/26 as Caledonia are rolled for just 61. However a poor batting performance has the WCC all out for 43. Till takes another 3/41 in their second innings, as Warrandyte are set 137 for victory. Till was stranded on 49no as we fall 7 runs short. |
FIRST EVER CENTURY BY JOHN TILL
Date: 24/02/1906 While the match report in the newspaper doesn't paint a glowing picture of Kangaroo Ground's fielding, it even mentions he was dropped first ball, in an era where team scores of 100 were rare, the club's first ever century by John Till is still a historic occasion for the WCC. |
REVERSE OUTRIGHT
Date: 06/11/1909 In the club's second game in the Box Hill Reporter competition, Thomas Schubert claimed 7/15 to dismiss Doncaster for just 40, but he would have been in shock as Warrandyte were all out for 33 in reply. However after dismissing Doncaster for 93, the target of 101 was easily achieved 3 wickets down thanks to 59 from J.Hodgson and Fred Topping unbeaten on 30. |
ALL TIED UP
Date: 22/10/1910
Warrandyte had a comfortable 1st innings lead as it made 95 in response to Croydon's 35, who fared better in its 2nd attempt making 93. 34 runs were required for an outright victory, surely a formality regardless that 2 of our players didn't show up on week 2. Nope. With the scores all tied up, Thomas Schubert was bowled for 0 creating our first ever tie.

REMARKABLE REVERSE OUTRIGHT
Date: 12/03/1927 In one of the closest games in WCG history, our 2nd XI lost the Semi Final on first innings to East Doncaster Juniors 113 to 103. When we were dismissed in our 2nd innings for 114, an outright loss seemed inevitable. However Fred Russell had other ideas. After his 4/25 in the 1st innings, he took 6/23 in the second, as the opposition were all out just 2 short of their target, sending the team in to the Grand Final. |
JACK McAULEY'S 10
Date: 14/03/1936
Life member Jack McAuley takes 7/25 and 3/42 to lead the 1st XI to the Grand Final with a dominate outright victory over Ringwood.

BLACK FRIDAY FIRES STOPS GAME
Date: 13/01/1939 A memorable moment for all the wrong reasons. The 2nd week of a 2-day game at Warrandyte vs Croydon is abandoned after the Black Friday bush fires razed half of the township the day before. Our clubrooms & our equipment included. A small mercy the fires didn't occur a day later while the match was on. |
REMARKABLE FIGHTBACK
Date: 02/02/1957
The 1st XI were all out for just 67 against East Burwood. However Allan Chapman (5/23) and Les Stoneham (4/33) bowl 22.1 overs unchanged and dismiss the opposition for just 59.

NAIL BITING WIN
Date: 11/10/2003 Round 1, and in a 1-day game vs South Croydon, the 1st XI were 8/98, before what turned out to be a vital partnership between Matt Chapman (28no) & Gerald Walshe (20), got the team to 9/143 after their 40 overs. In reply 10 runs were required off the last over, but only 8 were scored, as Warrandyte ran out 1 run winners. |
HIGHEST EVER LAST WICKET PARTNERSHIP
Date: 17/01/2004 Seems like all these ones lately are about last wickets. On a Sat/Sun clash, the 1st XI were all out for 184, largely thanks to a club record last wicket stand of 86 between Adam Beardall (62no) & Ian Broome (31). Croydon North were in the box seat at 6/169 with 10 overs to go, until Gerald Walshe claimed 3 of the last 4 wickets quickly, as we stuck home by 9 runs. This game, along with the infamous last round partnership between Adam White & Tyson Brent, were crucial in us sneaking in to the finals. |
OVER 800 RUNS
Date: 31/01/2004 In a remarkable game, the 2nd XI got off to a flyer in pursuit of Norwood's massive 9/416. Creg Creber smashed 71, Andrew Jarvis and Travis Cloke both scored 50s, but it was Tyson Brent's 114 that was the backbone. At 4/373 with 6 overs to go, we were a chance, but steady wickets in pursuit of quick runs proved too much, falling just 15 runs short. Bowling 50 wides and no balls didn't help our cause. |
150 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Date: 13/02/2005 The WCC celebrated its 150 year anniversary with a match against an invitational XI, that included celebrities such as AFL footballers Sam Mitchell, Chris Naish & Nathan Bower, media personalities Gerald Whateley, Rob Waters, and celebrities Wilbur Wilde & Ernie Dingo. Details can be found here. |

The 1st XI were struggling at 7/93, until a partnership between David Mooney (25no) and Matt Chapman (13) got them to within 5 runs of victory. 15yo Ayrton Dehmel showed nerves of steel to hang around with Dave to eventually pass the total.

LITTLE MAN GOES BIG
Date: 01/11/2008 Croydon North were all out for 176 against our 2nd XI in a 1-day game. In reply we were 9/161 as #11 Daniel Barry strode to the wicket to face the final over needing 16 runs for victory. The first ball was a swing and miss, he hit a 4 and then there was a wide. This left 11 off the last 4 balls. After three 2’s he needed 5 from the last ball. Little Barry managed a boundary which tied the game. |
A-MAC XI
Date: 10/10/2009
Alex McIntosh took 6/33 from 16 overs to dismiss East Ringwood for 181. After the 2nd XI just scraped over the line with a last wicket stand between Dale Lander and Mitch Gaffney, A-Mac took 5/23 in the 2nd innings and the batsmen did the rest to claim an outright win.

5TH XI FLAG

The 5th XI claim the premiership with a come from behind win against Templeton. After day one in the split innings format, Templeton held the upper hand being 4/85 compared to our 6/84. After Warrandyte we dismissed for 125, the situation looked dire. But Aaron Dean and Ryley Reardon helped the team take 7 for 30 to claim victory by just 10 runs.

Mystery's Top 20 Memorable Moments
#20 - 228 ON THE RICCI SCALE
Date: 05/02/2000 Our 1st XI would have been quietly confident defending 190 against Mooroolbark. And when we had them 3/16 things were looking good. That was until former Victorian batsman Brendan Ricci scored the highest individual score on the WCG, taking to all our bowlers on his way to an unbelievable 228no. |
#19 - RELEGATION SAVING PARTNERSHIP
Date: 15/02/2003 The 1st XI were on the bottom of the ladder before the penultimate round against St Andrews. Chasing 161, the game looked over when number 11 Adam Beardall joined Robert White at the crease with the score on 9/112. What happened next is WCC folklore. Their pair put on a then record last wicket stand of 68, with #9 White unbeaten on 62, and Beardall 17no. This partnership literally saved us from relegation, as we remained 2nd bottom after the last round. |
#18 - 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Date: 01/01/1956 The Warrandyte Cricket Club celebrates its centenary year with an exhibition game against a V.C.A XI, which included Australian cricketers Bill Ponsford, Jack Iverson, Colin McDonald & Lindsay Kline. Over 2,000 people were in attendance to celebrate the historic event. Scorecards are newspaper reports can be found here. |
#17 - PUP'S DAY OUT
Date: 12/02/2005 The 1st XI dismissed South Croydon for just 103, but once again found themselves in trouble at 9/86 in reply. #11 Steve Warr (5no) joined Gerald Walshe (16) at the crease and the pair got them over the line. But that wasn't the end of the drama. Walshe then ran riot in the 2nd innings, taking a career best 8/13 to dismantle South Croydon for just 34. The boys knocked the runs off with ease to claim an outright victory. |
#16 - A MASTERFUL KNOCK
Date: 03/03/1984 John Salter had a remarkable 2 seasons at Warrandyte, and holds the record of most runs in a season. This inning was arguably his best. Chasing a daunting 285 for victory against Mooroolbark, his innings of 143no steered the home side to victory 4 wickets down. |
#15 - ADAM WHITE MASTERCLASS
Date: 24/10/2009 Chasing St Andrews’ 179, Adam White completely dominates the opposition, nearly passing the total on his own. He scored 158 of the 233 runs scored while he was at the crease, falling just short of his Father's top score on the ground, as the 1st XI ended up on 4/324. |
#13 - 3 NAMES ON THE WCG HONOURBOARD
Date: 18/12/2010
On the first week, centuries to Jack Ellis (113) and Adam White (113no) saw their names added to the 100s & 7 wicket WCG honourboard. The following week Tyson Walshe joined them, taking 7/44 as the 1st XI thrashed St Andrews 5/325 to 160.

#10 - EARLIEST MENTION OF A WCG GAME
Date: 01/01/1864 History states there was cricket ground noted on a lands department survey in 1855, however the earliest discovered newspaper mention of cricket at the WCG was in BELL'S LIFE IN VICTORIA, where it documents scores from a game between Anderson's Creek (now Warrandyte) & neighbouring suburb, Caledonia. |
#9 - JAKE'S 8
Date: 06/03/2016 In their first season promoted to Trollope, the 1st XI found themselves in an Elimination Final against last season's runners-up, Warranwood. Batting first we made only 136, and in reply Warranwood were in control at 3/78. Jake Sherriff then produced another tremendous spell of bowling, claiming 8/41 to dismiss the opposition 19 runs short of the their target. |
#8 - WILLIAM COLMAN DOUBLE
Date: 17/02/1923 William Colman must have been a very good cricketer in his day. In 1922/23, he took a club record 90 wickets. In this match against Doncaster Heights he showed his all-round talent, taking identical figures of 6/34 in both innings, and topped it off with 84no with the bat, as the 1st XI won outright 285 to 83 & 82. It is the 5th most points scored by a player in one game. |
#7 - JAMES SCHUBERT'S ALL ROUND EFFORT
Date: 15/10/1927 Jim Schubert is the club's greatest all-rounder, and is the only player to have scored 4,000 runs and take 400 wickets. This match against East Doncaster was his finest effort, scoring the club's 10th ever century, and his 3rd, making 107 in the 1st XI's score of 193. He then backed that up taking 5/12 as the opposition were all out for 100. |
#6 - AN UNBEATEN PARTNERSHIP
Date: 21/02/1948 Arthur Chapman (122no) and Stan Houghton (110no) share a remarkable partnership against Heathmont as the 1st XI amass 2/257. This feat is made all the more better by the fantastic photo of the pair after the game with the WCG in the background in 1948. Courtesy of the Warrandyte Historical Society. |
#5 - JAKE'S ALL ROUND PERFORMANCE
Date: 19/11/2016
Jake Sherriff scored his 3rd club century, making 101 as the 1st XI racked up 9/274 against Norwood. He then backed it up with the ball, taking 7/65 in the 17 run victory. It is the only time in WCC history a player has made a century and taken 7 wickets in the same match.

#3 - SHERRIFF'S REMARKABLE SPELL
Date: 08/03/2015 After finishing 20 points clear on top of the Wilkins ladder, the 1st XI found themselves in trouble making only 121 in their Qualifying Final against 2nd placed Kilsyth. With a direct path to the Grand Final on the line, Kilsyth were seemingly cruising on 2/73. Jake Sherriff, who then had figures of 1/26 from 15 overs, produced one of the all time great bowling spells. He finished with figures of 7/33 from 23 overs, which ended with a hat-trick to win the game. The moment was significant in breaking a 31 year 1st XI premiership drought in the final, also against Kilsyth. |
#2 - BEST MATCH BOWLING FIGURES AT THE WCG - LES McCULLOCH
Date: 24/11/1923 Les McCulloch takes the most wickets ever in a match at the WCG. He took 7/21 and 8/18 to claim the remarkable match figures of 15/39 to lead the 1st XI to an outright victory over East Doncaster Juniors. In remains the most points ever made by a WCC player in one game. |
#1 - FIRST EVER PREMIERSHIP
Date: 23/03/1907 There were no finals in 1906/07, so after Warrandyte and Yarra Glen finished 1st and 2nd on the ladder, it was agreed to finish the round one clash between the 2 teams that was originally a no result as time ran out, to determine the premiers. The match resumed with Warrandyte in trouble trailing on the first innings 120 to 110, and teetering at 6/63 in the second innings. Crucial runs at the end from A.Nunwick (19) and Fred Topping (15) stretched the overall lead to 74 before they were all out. Our bowlers were magnificent, dismissing Yarra Glen for 67 as we won by just 7 runs. This is #1 on my list for its historical significance and the brilliantly detailed article in the local Evelyn Observer newspaper. |
Don't take this list literally. It's just one person's opinion and not of the Warrandyte Cricket Club.
It's purely to highlight and celebrate the amazing history we have.
My rankings were determined by the individual feat, historical significance, the standard of cricket at the time, and impact it had on the club.
